The Post-study Work visa UK is a visa for international students who have finished their degrees from any UK university. This means there is no need for a job offer or employer support with your application. The visa can be used to work, seek work, or establish a business.
At present, the 2-year visa is granted for those with bachelor’s and master’s degrees. A three-year visa is granted to PhD and doctoral graduates. However, there is an important change on the way. The duration will be shortened to 18 months from 1st January 2027 for non-PhD graduates. When you’re applying, you need to time it right.
Eligibility Requirements
There are clear eligibility criteria that must be met before applying.
The first requirement is to hold a valid Student Visa or Tier 4 Visa at the time of application. No other visa category can be converted into the graduate visa category.
Second, you need to be able to demonstrate achievement of an appropriate qualification. This covers a UK Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree, a PhD, a PGCE, PGDE, or an HND from Scotland. Some professional courses are also eligible, including the Legal Practice Course.
Thirdly, the university you are applying to needs to be recognised by the UKVI, and the university that you have completed needs to have notified the Home Office of that successful completion. Please wait for confirmation before applying, as early applications may be rejected.
Fourth, you need to be in the UK at the time of application. We will not accept applications from outside the country.
Lastly, you should never have had a graduate visa in the UK or permission under the Doctorate Extension Scheme. This route can only be used once.
What Can You Do on the Graduate Visa UK?
The graduate route in the UK offers you a huge degree of freedom. No minimum salary is required, and no restriction on the type of work or sector of the economy in which you can enter. You are allowed to work for any employer at any level on this visa. Jobs can be changed as many times as desired. Self-employment and starting your own business are also permitted. It is also ok to do voluntary work. However, there are definite limitations. There is no access to public funds. Most types of full-time study are not accepted, and you will not be able to register for another master’s or PhD program on this path. This visa does not allow you to bring any new dependents, but may allow existing Student visa dependents to extend their stay.
How to Apply for this?
Applications are submitted online via the official gov.uk application. The graduate visa is only available to apply from within the UK. You will require your passport, your latest CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) number, and confirmation that your University has notified the Home Office of your completion of the course. If the studies were paid for by a government or a scholarship sponsor, it is also required to have written approval from that government or sponsor.
The fee for the application is £937 (April 2026). In addition, you have to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, which is currently £1,035 per year. This would make the total cost of the two-year visa about £3,007. Typical processing time is about 8 weeks. The priority service is an extra £500 that usually results in a decision made in 5 working days.
Can You Switch from a Graduate Visa to Another UK Visa?
Yes — and that’s where long-term planning is crucial. The graduate visa is a short-term visa. You can keep staying in the country after the expiry date by changing to a new visa before that date.
The most frequently used further visa is the Skilled Worker Visa. Securing employment with a company that is licensed by the United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and can sponsor you provides a straightforward route to settlement. For individuals in science, research, the arts, and technology, the Global Talent Visa is also a good choice. The Innovator Founder Visa is for the entrepreneur who wants to start a business in the UK.
There is no requirement to have a gap between the graduate visa and subsequent application. Please note, however, that time spent on the graduate visa can be used towards the 10-year long residence route to Indefinite leave to remain. It is not in the five-year settlement route for Skilled Workers.
